While the UK is complaining about the hottest summer since 1976 (the weather girl said the temperature tomorrow is expected to rise to “32° would you believe!”) I am heading off to the south of France, and specifically Fab’s house in La Fare les Oliviers, a small village near Aix en Provence.
I have two goals for this short trip. One is to write several thousand words for my dissertation while sunning myself by the pool. The other is to pack everything for my five-day trip (including iBook, clothes, toiletries) in a Diesel record bag. Now, as a compuslive light packer, I have highly optimised packing lists and well-honed folding skills, which should allow me to achieve this goal without sacrificing utility or hygiene. Don’t try this at home lest you end up with mushrooms growing on your underwear. Try 96hours instead, or follow this advice.

I question your “light packer”-ness, after listening to you complain last tuesday like a little french toddler who had dropped her lolly. with your diesel bag you acheived greater density and a certain degree of neat compactness - until you realise that your hand no longer fits into the side compartment to retrieve your passport, or the customs official asks you to extract the “suspicious” object at the very bottom of your bag.
Point taken. One very heavy shoulder bag does not make for a comfortable journey. However, I realised that I overpacked on this occasion, so I could have gone lighter. In general, though, a small wheeled cabin bag would have been more suitable.
