In the driest of seasons for me as a movie-goer, where there’s nothing to look forward to watching, suddenly I discovered two films I can’t wait to see. Lucy Liu and Uma Thurman fight it out in Tarantino’s Kill Bill, while El Mariachi returns with the cast of Desperado (and then some) in Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Now, lest I become pigeon-holed as a tarantinesque action movie fan, but also for posterity, here is a fairly thorough list of my favourite movies, in, uhm, no particular order:
Emmanuelle (1974)
Meatballs (1979)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Electric Dreams (1984)
Last Starfighter, The (1984)
Brazil (1985)
Goonies, The (1985)
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Grand bleu, Le (1988)
Dazed and Confused (1993)
Chong qing sen lin (1994)
Clerks. (1994)
Zire darakhatan zeyton (1994)
Dead Man (1995)
Haine, La (1995)
Toy Story (1995)
Twelve Monkeys (1995)
Pillow Book, The (1996)
Chasing Amy (1997)
Contact (1997)
Big Lebowski, The (1998)
Milagro de P. Tinto, El (1998)
Rushmore (1998)
Taxi (1998)
Boondock Saints, The (1999)
Dut yeung nin wa (2000)
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain, Le (2001)
Jump Tomorrow (2001)
Lucía y el sexo (2001)
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Siu lam juk kau (2001)
Cidade de Deus (2002)
You will notice that none of the Star Wars films are on the list. That’s because Star Wars is a way of life. Other than that, I welcome recommendations for additions to the list.

Clerks!
i would call this a chronological list…so, ‘no particular order’ doesnt really apply…call me anal…but i am me :)
Ah, so it happened that the movies are sorted by year first then alphabetically within years. It’s all coincidental. And by no means particular.
Clerks does deserve a place in there. And so does Lucía y el sexo, which I just remembered. They have both been added.
Goonies!!!
I can’t find one of your favourite films in the list.
Well, yes. I figured that the most important exponent of my collection of French erotica of the 70s (one of my dream Jeopardy! categories — my Mastermind specialist subject) will suffice.
Wotcha cocker. What’s happened to the layout? It’s all gone floaty light. You also have appeared to leave off you list_ Fight Club and The Royal Tenembaums. Both of which are more than quite good.
And where can I find that Infostructure00 thing you did once?
Oh, and by the way, you both look particularly gay on the most recent webcam picture. Well done.
No time. Must work. Hard. No-verb bullet points:
- Layout messed up by moving to new software. Will fix/redesign when doctor.
- Fight Club and Tenenbaums decent, not in mood to put on list.
- Gayness accidental.
writing a “favourite” list is kind of like trying to thank people during one’s oscar acceptance speech. that’s why they’ve started saying; of all the people I need to thank, these are a few that definitely need mention. but even that’s not really good enough; you end up having to thank people because of who you’ve thanked.
I liked the goonies LOADS when I was younger. but it’s not a great movie. it lies in the same category as star wars, and off the list. I think when you eventually refine the list in a month, kill bill will knock twelve monkeys, dazed and confused, and the big lebowski off.
I tend to agree on most counts, including Goonies. I doubt that Twelve Monkeys, Dazed and Confused, and the Dude will go off the list any time soon, but the point remains that this list is temporally anchored, and prone to change over time. This realisation is what prompted me to post it under a date-stamped blog entry rather than put it on a linked static page as I was considering to do initially. It is a record of August 17th.
you have forgotten JAWS!..all we really need to do is consult Lucy for her list that we made, of all movies must see! but one movie that will be on the top of my list is ‘Nightmare before christmas’….a MUST see for everyone!
Ah, but you see, this list is a very personal one; it does not pertain to everyone. These are not seminal or must-see films. Just my favourites.
Anyway, I added Jump Tomorrow, which I had mentioned a few entries earlier as a film that should be added to my list.
