I found this quote while blog-surfing the other day, and I thought I would put it up here for posterity as it is so pertinent to my current situation. It’s from Maciej Ceglowski’s Idle Words:
People with jobs don’t appreciate the terrific time pressures of unemployment. Having replaced a daily grind of drudgery with the ability to do your heart’s desire, all day, every day, until the credit lines run out, you find yourself actually having to go out and do that thing, all day, every day. And you get tired. That Russian novel is not going to read itself, the film festival waits for no man, and if it’s not four A.M., those bars are still open.
If you didn’t know, I concluded my collaboration with s2architecs in the spring (it just wasn’t exactly what I was looking for — no love lost with the guys) and I have been “idling” ever since. My idling currently consists of:
- A lot of reading. I have been rereading the complete works of Douglas Adams, among other stuff.
- Plenty of experimentation for the redesign of fufurasu.com. It’s still a way off, but I’m working on it.
- Occasional evening sorties.
- Addressing the referees’ issues with the research paper I submitted to Environment and Planning B.
- Going through the 18 CDs Kostas sent me, my first fanmail present! The rest of you, take a cue.
- Working on the DoCoMo Keitai City competition with the 00:/ team.
- Printing T-shirts.
- Scribbling notes for the book I want to write.
- I gave Greece plenty of time, and it didn’t come through in any satisfactory way, so I’m fairly busy preparing the ground for a move to London come autumn. I need a job and a place to stay. In short, I need a life.
- Oh, and as of tomorrow, I’ll be back in Tzia for a few days, as the thankful guest of Alexandros DipAA. So I’ll just go ahead and add sea and sun to this list.
- Sea.
- Sun.
- Gloating.

I know exactly what you mean! idling is very tiring and is making me feel very guilty, as “That Russian novel dissertation book is not going to read itself”.
hmmm I guess i cant put html codes into the comment! oops! well….make it “That dissertation book is not going to read itself”.
yes, do write that book.
i too have experienced the onerous task of trying to make good on wish lists in the face of too much time! Exult! I’m so happy to hear you might be making a move to london!!!
Where am I? What’s going on?
Idling… that sounds familiar…in fact I have experienced it for 6 months last year. My advice to you is to would be : a) Enjoy it while it lasts! It’s a real luxury of being able to wake up without an alarm clock, b) take on a hobby, otherwise you will regret of having so much time in your hands and not having done anything decent with it. I’ve done both and had the best time ever. And occasionally remind to yourself that the grass is always greener on the other side.
