Σκραμπλ®

[Roof tiles.]

Last night Raphael, Rea, and I crashed the Scrabble® night on the roof terrace of the Little Polytechnic in the centre of Athens. The fledgling Scrabble® scene in Greece is plagued by a lack of a definitive word source. The organiser (called Socrates) started us off with a list of the two and three-letter words in modern Greek compiled from three current dictionaries. For those of you interested (hey, Matt) here is a list of the 99 twos:

ΑΕ ΑΙ ΑΜ ΑΝ ΑΠ ΑΡ ΑΣ ΑΦ ΑΧ ΒΑ ΒΕ ΓΑ ΓΗ ΓΩ ΔΑ ΔΕ ΔΗ ΔΙ ΔΩ ΕΑ ΕΙ ΕΚ ΕΜ ΕΝ ΕΞ ΕΠ ΕΣ ΕΥ ΕΩ ΖΑ ΖΗ ΖΟ ΖΩ ΗΩ ΘΑ ΙΑ ΙΕ ΙΝ ΙΟ ΙΥ ΚΑ ΚΕ ΚΙ ΛΑ ΜΑ ΜΕ ΜΗ ΜΙ ΜΥ ΝΑ ΝΕ ΝΗ ΝΙ ΝΥ ΞΙ ΞΥ ΞΩ ΟΙ ΟΜ ΟΝ ΟΠ ΟΣ ΟΥ ΟΦ ΟΧ ΠΑ ΠΙ ΠΩ ΡΕ ΡΟ ΡΩ ΣΑ ΣΕ ΣΙ ΣΤ ΣΥ ΤΑ ΤΕ ΤΗ ΤΙ ΤΟ ΤΣ ΤΩ ΦΑ ΦΙ ΧΑ ΧΙ ΧΜ ΨΕ ΨΗ ΨΙ ΩΑ ΩΜ ΩΝ ΩΟ ΩΠ ΩΣ ΩΦ ΩΧ

I think I might go back for more next Thursday.

I live in the US and would love to find a Greek Scrabble Game. Any leads would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

I would be very happy to pick one up for you and mail it, if only I hadn’t moved to London. What you need, sir, is a friend in Greece. Having said that, there is a foreign language bookshop in London’s Soho that sells different language versions of Scrabble®. When I discovered it I went in to look; I found French, German, and Arabic versions, but not the Greek one. Perhaps you could try a foreign language bookshop near where you live. Best of luck!
