On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to not one but two concerts of Graham Fitkin, my favourite composer. The first was a solo piano lunch-time concert in which he played “The Cone Gatherers,” a favourite piece of mine. The second one, on Wednesday, included recent works and more extensive instrumentation. Having arrived at the venue one hour too early, I was happy to find that there was a pre-concert discussion with Fitkin. Some of the discussors suggested that his music is very “English.” I am not sure what that means. It is certainly lyrical, but “English?” Given its funkiness, I would be more inclined to call it “American.” Both concerts were held at the excellent Michael Tippet Centre.
C++ is a pain.
