Channel 4 is playing a movie called Karamurat, the Sultan’s Warrior, an Italian-Turkish production, also known as Kara Murat Seyh (in Turkish, “Sheik Kara Murat”), Karamurat, La Belva Dell’Anatolia (in Italian, “the beast of Anatolia”), Karamurat, Le Vengeur (in French, “Karamurat, the avenger”), De Tijger Van Anatolië (in Dutch, “the tiger of Anatolia”), and Karamurat - Sein Kung Fu Ist Tödlich (the German title is my favourite: “Karamurat - his Kung Fu is deadly”). Oh, and check this quip from the Channel 4 website:
Cuneyt Arkin [the actor playing Karamurat] was the biggest action star of Turkish cinema - a combination of Bruce Lee, John Wayne and Douglas Fairbanks - doing all of his own stunts.
Anyway, there was this scene were several Turks were burried in sand up to their necks, and a bunch of Christian opressors were suggesting that they change their faith in order to save their lives. At this the Turks shouted out in chorus “we were born Muslim and we shall die Muslim,” or words to that effect. They were promptly slaughtered. This reminded me of the lore (they called it “history”) I was taught in elementary school regarding the Greeks who suffered martyric deaths for their faith in the hands of monstrous, sadistic Turks. It’s nice to see the propaganda from the other side.
